Why a Traditional Marriage is so important for young adults:
In Miami-Dade County Florida it was approved that same sex marriages, (non-traditional) should take place. Miami Dade County Court Systems and the voters were able to voice their choice for change to take place. A traditional marriage (heterosexual) consists of two people that fall in love with each other and decide they want to be together for the rest of their lives. They decide to settle their differences and create a unification between two people called “marriage”. Many times having children is part of the decision in the marriage. Marriage may not be for everyone, but it is an important part of our society. Nowadays in many communities same sex marriage seems to be an issue.
Marriage is the ultimate commitment. Having been married since the age of twenty-eight, and having fourteen years of a successful marriage I can advocate that marriage empowers a person and allows them to be the best they can be. There is the advantage of having your spouse as your life partner. There is intimacy, financial stability, trust, and also the ability to create a family from this commitment.
As Professor Scott Hall from Ball State University mentions” marriage is the highest point a romantic relationship can reach, or the highest point one can make.” There is a security to marriage. Many young couples feel pressure to get married. However, for some marriages, it is more important than a hobby, it is a way of life: There were 517 students surveyed and it was found that for many:
The research found that young adults expected that marriage would be more important totheir lives than parenting, careers or leisure activities. Marriage becomes a desire for many.Marriage is considered a normal. The study also found:
- Those with stronger religious beliefs were going to prioritize marriage.
- Married couples tend to drink less alcohol, become more child centered, watch less porn and also were less promiscuous.
- Participants with higher values of marriage also had a greater belief that marriage takes effort, embraced stereotypical gender roles and believed in the overall importance of marriage.
“Some associate marriage with traditional gender roles — which is why some people are not very interested in marriage,” Hall said. “I think the majority of young people have a fairly flexible ideal regarding gender roles, but I think most believe that gender is inherent in the types of interests and tasks people engage in or aspire toward, so they accept — and even embrace — some gendered divisions of marital roles.” (Hall, 2015).
Although marriage is not important for everyone, marriage may still be the best commitment between two people. There is the creation of a family. Only half of Americans are married. According to the Pew Center Research Center about 40% of unmarried adults considered marriage to be obsolete. For those that remain married, “marriage conveys a sense of meaning, purpose, direction and stability that tends to benefit adults and especially children. People who become married have an expectation of sexual fidelity, and that fidelity tends to engender a sense of trust and security (Gabel, 2012),”
Writing this article was not meant to be controversial. This article was written due to many issues in the community of Miami-Dade County, regarding same sex marriages. As a Democrat I take a rather conservative point of view on same sex marriages. I wanted to make a standpoint on our youth and traditional marriages, and the importance of being in a heterosexual marriage. New society and same sex marriages may not be for everyone. In same sex marriages “this means equality in marriage if not on the job, for a lot more couples who have been kept waiting far too long” (Clawson, 2015). Young people should get married if they fall in love with each other. Society has been so critical of marriage in general for the past decade that it almost seems that heterosexuals may just be scared of the commitment.
